Hello Freecycle(TM) Members,

Every so often, a member will complain to us about the presence of photos of items that are no longer available on our group's Photos page(s).

We know you're busy with chores, or you've got your hands full with children, or you're dog-tired from work, or all of the above. Or maybe there's that all-important sports or news program on TV that you just can't miss. We can all come up with a dozen or more excuses for procrastinating on jobs that are either too distasteful or too low on our list of priorities. We understand. We have the same problems.

Procrastination doesn't always just affect you and your family, however, and can be downright inconsiderate, if not rude. So please be a good member of this community forum and take the time to delete those photos of your items that are no longer available. If your album is empty, please delete the entire album. Otherwise, you may find your album and photos have been removed by the Moderators due to our "CLEAN SWEEP" policy.

Thanks and regards to all of you!
Your Friendly Tacoma Area Freecycle(TM) Moderators

FREECYCLE(TM) NETWORK MEMBERS USE THE LIST AT THEIR OWN RISK.
Please take reasonable measures to protect your safety and privacy when posting to the list or participating in an exchange. By joining the list, you agree to hold neither the list owners, moderators nor anyone affiliated with Freecycle.org responsible or liable for any circumstance resulting from a Freecycle-related exchange or communication.

SAFETY. Be aware! It is up to each individual member of Freecycle when arranging for pickup of the item being given away to be appropriately aware of the potential risk of having "a stranger" come to your home to pick something up. Freecycle as an organization assumes no responsibility for this risk. If you, for example, are a single woman living alone, you may want to arrange to meet in a public place or leave the item on the front porch without mentioning whether or not you'll be home at the time of pickup. Be cautious about revealing too much personal information.

Thank you,
Your Friendly Tacoma Area Freecycle(TM) Moderators

Rules, Regs and Policies ** Updated November 2010**

Thanks for being a part of The (ever-expanding) Freecycle Network. We're changing the world one gift at a time! This message is sent to all subscribers upon joining, and periodically thereafter to the entire list.

If you're new to the group or want a quick refresher on making the most of our Freecycle group, please read on!

Freecycle(TM) harnesses the power of the Internet to connect people who have stuff to throw away with others in their area who would like that stuff, so it doesn't wind up in a landfill. We ALL have things in our garages, closets, attics, offices, etc., that we don't need. Freecycle lets you find someone who does. No item is too big or too small but ALL must be 100% FREE with NO strings attached.

A perfect consumer/earth friendly circle is no overhead, no money, no waste and no catch. After all, there is no point in throwing something away when it still has good life in it or it can be of use to someone else. And you know what they say - The only difference between a yard sale and trash is proximity to the curb. So, get that good stuff off the curb and share it with your community instead!

If you have been a member of a Freecycle group before then you already know the basics. However, some rules/policies vary from state to state and group to group so please read - then reread - the info below.

This group serves the communities of Fife, Fircrest, Gig Harbor, Key Peninsula, McKenna, Midland, Milton, Parkland, Roy, Spanaway, Tacoma, University Place, Yelm, WA

Tacoma Area Freecycle Etiquette
(Or in other words, THE Rules, Regs and Policies for Freecycle)

THE BASIC STUFF:

*KEEP IT FREE, LEGAL & APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES. This INCLUDES your Yahoo profile!!! This also means, no pornography, alcohol, tobacco, drugs (of any kind, including all medicines, vitamins, creams, etc.), firearms or other weapons. No advertising your yard sale either, please, as this involves money. Please see our List of No's for a more complete list.

*NO Spam is to be posted to the group OR sent privately to group members EVER. Offenders WILL be banned.

*NO Politics. NO Religion. NO personal attacks or rudeness. NO money. NO trading/bartering. EVER!

The rules above are strictly enforced and there will be *NO* exceptions.

YAHOO GROUP BASICS:

*If you are new to Yahoo Groups and don't have a Yahoo profile yet, please go to http://groups.yahoo.com/ and set one up ASAP. You do NOT have to put your full name and info on the profile but you should have one to access mail delivery options, view the pictures in the photo album, participate in polls, and do all that other good stuff. It only takes a few minutes to complete, so just do it already. You'll be glad you did!

While you are there be sure to check your marketing preferences and turn them all OFF so you do not get spam from Yahoo.

*All NEW members are moderated to prevent spam and/or harassing posts. Members will stay moderated until it is clear that the rules/regs/policies are understood and will be respected. Thank you in advance for your understanding on this matter.

*E-mail Settings** We request that you have your delivery options set to 'Individual mail', 'Daily Digest' or 'Special Notices'. With Individual mail you will receive each post in a separate email message. With Daily Digest you will receive a group of messages once or twice a day. Using Special Notices will mean you need to read all the messages on the groups website, you will only receive important information from your Moderators in your in box. At a minimum, please set your email preferences to Special Notices so you will get all the important things that your groups moderators have to pass on. 'Web Only' is NOT used and Moderators will change it to 'Special Notices'. Group moderators reserve the right to make changes if you are not in compliance with this very basic email rule.

*DO use the same profile and address for all your Freecycle posts!! We match up addresses when cleaning the archived messages and it can be very confusing if your TAKEN post comes from an address different than the OFFER post.

*DO NOT use more than one profile or email address in an attempt to post more wanted messages and receive more items. That is dishonest and quite rude to the other members and we *WILL* figure it out anyway. When we do, you WILL be banned and the incidence reported to all Freecycle moderators statewide.

*DO NOT use taglines, signature lines and/or footers that contain business information, addresses, or phone numbers. They WILL be edited at the moderator's discretion.

*DO NOT EVER contact another member only to be rude or judgmental. If you have opinions about what someone posts or says, we expect you to be mature enough to keep them to yourself. Personal attacks towards our members WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!!

HOW TO POST:

*When you respond to a post, the message should go to that person, not to the group. Contact the individual directly at their private email address by hitting your reply button.

*To post via the web page, go to
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TacomaAreaFreecycle/

*To post to the group via email, write to
TacomaAreaFreecycle@yahoogroups.com.

*Use correct headers for messages or they WILL be edited or returned. The headers to use are:

OFFER: Rocking horse (Tacoma)
TAKEN: Rocking horse (Tacoma)
WANTED: End table (72nd St & Pacific)
RECEIVED: End table (72nd St & Pacific)

*DO indicate what area you are located in, in each post you submit, when posting and when responding to messages. PLEASE note this in the subject line of your post. It is VERY important to do this so that you don't get tons of replies from folks to far to come pick it up anyway.

*DO NOT post for the same item repeatedly. Once every 14 days is more than enough. Please be patient. Not every wanted message can (or will be) answered right away. Your messages remain in the archives, which are open to our members to browse at their leisure so they are still out there. If you are not getting replies to your Wanted messages, pay it forward and post some nice Offers.
Repeated messages may be deleted without notification.

*DO NOT post a dozen wants in one day! You probably won't get the kind of responses you are looking for if you do.

*DO NOT go into great detail about why you need or want something either. Just the request is good enough most of the time and in actuality, a long detailed story can do more harm than good sometimes. Use the body of the post to describe the items, no stories allowed.

WHAT TO POST AND WHAT NOT TO POST:

*DO post offers for all the good stuff you don't need anymore... furniture, appliances, toys, clothes, lawnmowers, car parts, etc. If it's still good, then someone probably could use it.

*DO post a Taken message when your item is gone and a Received when your Want has been met. We cannot keep the archives up-to-date if you do not. We will be positively ecstatic if you can include the original subject line heading in your post as well!

*DO NOT post "generic" taken messages, such as Taken: all the stuff I posted. PLEASE include the item names in your Taken message or it will be rejected and you will be asked to submit another.

*Please DO NOT write an entire message in capital letters. That is considered screaming in Internet etiquette and it is very hard on most people's eyes. If you use all caps because of medical conditions, please let us know and we will work with you on it. Posts written in all caps will either be edited by a moderator or returned to you for editing.

*DO NOT post your phone number or address directly to the group! Such information WILL BE edited out of messages and the message will be deleted from the archives. Give this info ONLY to the person willing to come pick up your item. Meet in a public place if you want or need to.

*DO NOT submit free-for-all posts (such as "It's on the porch, whoever gets here first can have it.') Posting in that manner encourages hundreds of people to head that direction, and 99% of those people will walk away disappointed and empty-handed, after having expended a great deal of time and gasoline for nothing. Please pick out a few items, post them and set up a specific time for folks to pick the items up. That approach may seem like more work but if people are making unneeded trips for nothing it will sour them towards you and towards Freecycle in general and that's not good for anyone. Ultimately, these posts will be edited by a moderator or returned to you for editing.

The basic mission of Freecycle is to keep items out of landfills. A corollary of that is *environmentalism* which is best served by not having folks driving around wasting fossil fuels unnecessarily for items that will be gone when they get there anyway.

*NO requests for money EVER!

*NO requests for Frequent Flyer miles, phone cards or special events tickets such as ball games or concerts. We are sorry and wish we could help but Freecycle is just not the place for things like that. If anyone has something like that to share they will post an offer in our Cafe.

*NO requests for Sunday paper type of coupons - there are other groups and web sites just for that such as our Cafe group.

*NO requests for G-mail accounts or similar non-tangibles.

*DO NOT offer prescription drugs. It is illegal to transfer a prescription to another person, not to mention unsafe.

*DO NOT offer or request any cosmetics or personal care products, as there could be sanitation issues with those products.

*DO NOT post a taken message in an attempt to claim someone else's offer - ONLY the original poster should send the taken message. Repeated offenses on this rule may result in your removal from the group.

*NO advertising your garage sale unless it is to offer what is left over. Send a quick email to the Moderators on how to set up a post to 'Offer' your free items after your garage sale.

*If you are an EBay seller, thrift store owner, or a reseller of any kind, FULL DISCLOSURE OF YOUR INTENTION TO SELL ITEMS RECEIVED FROM FREECYCLE MEMBERS IS REQUIRED UP FRONT. You MUST disclose your intent to sell when responding to a post so the gifter can make an informed decision with all the details and facts. Members have the right to inquire as to the intended use of any item they offer.

ANYONE FOUND SELLING ITEMS OBTAINED ON THIS LIST ON EBAY, THE CLASSIFIED OR OTHER YAHOO GROUPS WILL BE BANNED AND REPORTED.

*Do NOT contact folks in response to a want they posted and offer to sell them something! If you are not willing to give it for free at this time, please don't bring it up. Repeat offenses on this rule will get you banned and reported statewide.

*DO NOT request money for your offers either. Freecycle means FREE, folks!!

*DO NOT offer to pay for an item or to pay for gas for delivery.

A FEW LAST THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:

*Gifting does NOT have to be 1st responded, 1st served!! It's been suggested that the first person to reply to your offer may not always be the best person to take your item, so consider the people who can't stick by their computer all day. To simply choose the first responder every time stops MANY deserving people from ever having an opportunity of participate. Many groups ask their members to wait 24 hours before deciding who will receive their item. This cannot really be enforced but sometimes it would be helpful to those that don't have as much computer access so please consider it if your circumstances allow. The ultimate decision is up to the person giving the item and to choose the recipient as they see fit.

*If you have responded to an offer this is no guarantee the item is yours until you hear from the offerer and they tell you it is! Give your personal information (privately, not on the list) to one potential gifter / recipient at a time, and ask for their phone number in return.

*Once you are set to give or receive an item, make arrangements as you like but please practice common courtesy in accommodating people's schedules.

*Arrange pickup with only one person at a time. Often it is possible to gift an item without having to rearrange your schedule by simply leaving the item in a designated location, such as the porch or along side the garage. Share this info only with the receiver, not with the entire group.

*DO NOT promise your items to one person and then give them to another! Again, please treat others the way you would wish to be treated.

*DO NOT take more than you were promised! If someone agrees to leave an item on the porch for you, don't rudely take advantage and swipe the things left for others!!

*Mailing a small item is perfectly fine if both parties involved agree to it, someone is willing to pay the postage AND the item still remains FREE. If you promise someone you will repay them for the postage, be a good citizen and make sure you do just that.

*Check the archived messages frequently and see what wants you can fulfill. Maybe you forgot all about that old purple doo-hickey sitting out there in the garage but somebody needs it, so give it away already! Consider gifting to a person with an existing request rather than posting to the group. Keep in mind (and don't worry about) that the archives will contain more Wants than Offers, as the completed transactions would have been deleted already.

You may want to try joining the Tacoma Area Freecycle Café. It is a place where you can share coupons, links, services, resources, community agencies, volunteer opportunities, trade, or barter.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TacomaAreaFreecycle_Cafe

Thank you all for being here and being a part of this movement. The generosity and kindness we have seen since getting involved with Freecycle is quite amazing... and we are proud to be a part of it. Keep up the good work!

Gratefully,
Your Friendly Tacoma Area Freecycle(TM) Moderators

* Freecycle ~ Together we are changing the world, one gift at a time. *

*If you feel you need to unsubscribe, we hate to see you go and hope you will return if you can. Keep in mind that Yahoo can take days to update after a change is made so you could still receive mail after leaving a group and there is nothing we can do about that. Also, whatever mail is already in the pipeline will be delivered by your ISP and there is nothing we can do about that either. One thing that might help is to switch to no mail first, wait until the mail completely stops and then unsubscribe. Please DO NOT make repeated changes in your status or reply to numerous unsubscribed messages, as this will slow down the update even more.

This message repeats once a month. Please reread often just to refresh your memory!

Thank you!

File - Posting Rules of Tacoma Area Freecycle

1. Posting to the Group

These are the POSTING RULES for Tacoma Area Freecycle(TM)
(Rev. January 2, 2011)

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TacomaAreaFreecycle

{*{*{Changing the world one gift at a time}*}*}

Thank you for being a member of this local group of The Freecycle Network. Although long, the rules are really quite simple. Please read the rules before posting so you can enjoy your Freecycle experience.
__________________________________________________________

WHAT FREECYCLE IS:
Freecycle is an international grassroots environmental movement designed to minimize the amount of "stuff" we dump in our landfills. We do this by providing a forum for people to give their unwanted but still usable items to new homes. As a side benefit, we're also creating a strong sense of community.

WHAT FREECYCLE IS NOT:
a) a place to publicize long lists
b) a place to ask for extravagant or new items that aren't likely to be given away
c) a charitable organization to meet all your wants/needs
d) a discussion list
__________________________________________________________

TANGIBLE ITEMS -- FREE, LEGAL, & APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES
This is our main Freecycle rule to live by. E-mail, Yahoo ID's, etc., must be family-friendly. No weapons, adult-oriented items, alcohol, tobacco. If in doubt, e-mail the moderators for assistance.
__________________________________________________________

WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO MAKE YOUR FIRST POST AN OFFER, NOT A WANTED.
__________________________________________________________

SUBJECT LINES OF POSTS
Use only these keywords to make it easy for others to view:

OFFER
WANTED
TAKEN
RECVD (or RECEIVED)

Your Home (Location) is **required** at the end of the subject line for all posts submitted to encourage local gifting. Feel free to include EITHER your city OR 2 intersecting cross-streets.

USE THE ABOVE KEYWORDS ONLY
DO NOT USE: Reoffered, Repost, Needed, Pending Pickup.

EXAMPLES -- with (Location: OR nearest cross-streets)

OFFER: Birdcage (Tacoma)
TAKEN: Birdcage (Tacoma)

WANTED: Moving boxes (6th & Jackson)
RECEIVED: Moving Boxes (6th & Jackson)

ADMIN: For moderators' messages to all members -- please read.

(Location) is **required** at the end of all subject lines.

Use your city OR your crossroads (2 intersecting streets).

NOTE: DO NOT USE "PENDING" OR "PENDING PICKUP" IN THE SUBJECT LINE! Please put "pending" or "pending pickup" in the BODY of your message!!
__________________________________________________________

HOW TO POST TO THE LIST

a) Send an email to TacomaAreaFreecycle@yahoogroups.com
or
b) From the website select "POST"

OFFER and WANTED posts

The subject line *must* have 3 parts:
1) start with the keyword OFFER, TAKEN, WANTED or RECEIVED
2) followed by the item you're offering or requesting
3) ending with your home location in parenthesis on **ALL** posts

ABOUT OFFERs

Multiple OFFERs may be listed in one e-mail.
Please number each item for clarity.
You may include a general grouping in the subject line; for example:
OFFER: Kitchen items--see list (Tacoma)
OFFER: Kids' stuff--see list (Spanaway)
OFFER: Misc. stuff (Parkland)

Please post a TAKEN for each OFFER when a recipient has been chosen or the item has been picked up. Post only one TAKEN per OFFER.

DESCRIPTION: Describe your item using color, size, condition. Note if it needs repair, works great, or is damaged or soiled. A recipient is under no obligation to take an OFFER if it isn't accurately described. Some items truly are landfill-ready.

__________________________________________________________

REPOSTING: Please wait at least 14 days to repost the same item. This is because of the high volume of email that comes through this group on a daily basis. We don't want to overload member mailboxes unnecessarily. In the meantime, our members have the capability of searching the member archives and anyone who is looking for your item will find your original message.

__________________________________________________________

PHOTOS: You're welcome to upload a photo of the item to the website and mention it in your post. Add your photos using "Create Album" and name it with your e-mail name or Yahoo ID. Please delete the photo when posting a TAKEN.
__________________________________________________________

WHO GETS MY OFFER?
That is totally up to you! We recommend that you select from several responses, not just the first one. Consider collecting responses for up to 24 hours to give everyone a chance. If a non-profit group responds, you might consider giving your item to them.

You do NOT have to respond to each member that contacts you about your item. They will know the item has been gifted once you post a 'Taken'.

***SAVE YOUR EMAIL REPLIES IN CASE OF A NO-SHOW***
__________________________________________________________

RESALE of OFFERS
A seller may only respond to an OFFER with full disclosure of their intent to sell the item. ***For example, a non-profit group might respond seeking items for a fund-raiser.*** Members have the right to inquire as to the intended use of any item they OFFER, and are free to give it to anyone they want.
__________________________________________________________

WHEN DO I POST A TAKEN?
When you've gifted your OFFER, and/or the item has been picked up, then you post a TAKEN. This notifies members your item is no longer available. Posting a TAKEN takes the place of writing every member who responded to your OFFER. You may wish to mention the member's first name to create a sense of community.

Do not use "Pending Pickup" or "PPU" in the subject line. Save emails from a few responders, so that if the item is not picked up, you can offer it to your second choice. If you have a no-show, do not repost the item. You will need to wait 14 days to repost the same item. Meanwhile, members can see your original post on the list.
__________________________________________________________

ABOUT WANTED POSTS

WANTED posts help the Freecycle world go 'round, but are not its main focus. Freecycle is not a charity and isn't meant to provide everything you want or need. Be reasonable and request items that someone might be done using. Above all else, don't ask for an extravagant item like a diamond ring, which we'd all like to have. Messages asking for help for families, etc. will not be approved.

Members may not post WANTEDS for items to resell.

__________________________________________________________

BLANKET WISH LISTS
Long list of items in a 'Wanted' post will be returned for editing by the member. We ask that you submit ONE specific item per 'Wanted' post.

Ok to post:

WANTED: Sewing items (Tacoma)
Looking for needles and thread.

NOT ok:

WANTED: Sewing items (Tacoma)
Looking for needles, thread, fabric, sewing machine, quilting machine, or anything else you have for sewing.

__________________________________________________________

POLICY FOR 'WANTED' POSTS
The guideline on placing 'Wanted' posts is no more than 3 'Wanted' posts per 7 days and you may not ask for the same item again for 14 days. When a member tries to post more than 3 'Wanted' posts, a denial email will be sent to the member reminding them of the guideline. If a member habitually goes over the number of 'Wanted' posts, we reserve the right to put the member on moderation.

__________________________________________________________

WHEN DO I POST A RECVD?
When your WANTED post brings a response and you receive your item, please post your RECVD message so we can share in your success. You may wish to thank the generous person by first name.

1. RESPONDING TO AN OFFER or a WANTED

Responses go to the member, not to the group. Be friendly. Suggest a pickup time that might work for you and what part of town you are coming from. Don't just say, "I want it." Be polite.

If you have deleted an email and are trying to reach a member, contact the moderators before posting to the group to see if they can help you.

The address for contacting the moderators is the "List owner" address found at the bottom of each group's homepage.

********************************************************************************

2. PICKUPS and NO-SHOWS

Arrange pickup of the item with one member at a time. No "first come, first serve" OFFERs to multiple recipients because they cause disappointment and waste gas, which isn't in the spirit of Freecycle.

When you arrange to pick something up, please show up! If you can't make it, a quick CALL or EMAIL will be appreciated by the other member who is giving you a gift as well as their time. Don't end up on someone's no-show list. Word gets around. Make it a friendly and safe transaction.

__________________________________________________________

Be polite & respectful; meet when arranged:

I know it can sometimes be like playing phone tag, only with emails, but please do not tell someone you are coming at such and such a time unless you are *sure* you can do so. I usually do not put my life on hold for someone to come pick up an item, but if I *am* home and expecting someone, and no one shows, I consider it very inconsiderate of the "no-show".

Another thing: if you go to someone's house to pick up something that has been left out by the door, and the homeowner is not home or cannot come to the door for some reason, it would be courteous of you to leave a note to let the homeowner know who picked up the item.

We understand that sometimes last minute emergencies pop up; life happens.... If it does, it's courteous to let the gifter know before you make them wait for you. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Showing up when you say you will is good for you, the gifter, and the Freecycle(TM) community.

And please don't ask for an item unless you are positive that you want it! I think a lot of people do "impulse shopping" and then change their mind about getting what they thought they wanted five minutes earlier. It's okay to change your mind, but if you do, please let the offerer know ASAP, so they can give the item to someone else.

**FREECYCLE(TM) NETWORK MEMBERS USE THE LIST AT THEIR OWN RISK.

SAFETY -- Public posting and personal information Tacoma Area Freecycle prohibits placing phone numbers or addresses in posts. Exchange in private email only, never in a post to the group. You might get swamped with calls. A reverse look-up service might provide access to your address. Making contact information publicly available is a risk that is not encouraged. Addresses are not allowed in posts to the group, except when advertising a free "moving sale" or freebies after a yard sale.

I am concerned for the safety of our members, as well as your identity. Though it can be more convenient to list your personal information for everyone to see, it is not worth the risk. I do my best to keep out spammers and perverts, but there is no reason to ASSUME that EVERYONE in our group is honest, much as we'd all like to believe they are. The fact is that we all need to be very careful about giving out personal information to strangers!

It is up to each member of Freecycle to be appropriately aware of the potential risk of having "a stranger" come to your home to pick up an item. Freecycle as an organization assumes no responsibility for this risk. You may want to arrange to meet in a public place or leave the item on the front porch without mentioning whether or not you'll be home at the time of pickup. Be cautious about revealing too much personal information.

*WANTEDS* for Plants & Seeds,

No personal attacks or rudeness, or correcting another member's list etiquette.
It's all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

No use of email footers, taglines, signature lines and/or footers that contain business information, addresses, phone numbers, websites, links, or blogs advertising. They WILL be edited at the moderator's discretion.

All items must be free -- no strings attached.

Do not contact members except to respond to an OFFER or a WANTED, including mass email. Do not add members to your address book unless you've established a mutual relationship with them.

This is by no means a complete list. Moderators have the right to add items as they deem necessary.

__________________________________________________________

Guns, Ammunition, or Any Type of Weapon

It is against Freecycle policy to post guns or ammo. One of the rules of Freecycle(TM) is that everything must be appropriate for all ages, which ammunition clearly is not. But if someone wanted to pass on used shell casings or cloth wads or a reloader machine or something like that, well I don't see the harm. Gunpowder, black powder, live ammo, pistols, rifles, grenades etc. cannot be posted. There are plenty of boards and groups dedicated to shooting sports and weapons in general.

********************************************************************************

4. Reseller Guidelines

Occasionally list members will reply to offers or post wanteds for items they do not intend to use personally. Whether they resell or redistribute the item, for their own profit or not, these members are termed resellers for purposes of this list.

While claiming or asking for items in order to resell or redistribute them does not violate Freecycle(TM) guidelines, some members prefer to give their items directly to the people who will use them. For this reason, members are entitled to ask responders if they intend to resell the item in question before agreeing to the transaction. If asked, resellers MUST disclose their intention to resell/redistribute any item.

In addition, resellers are also required to state their intention to resell/redistribute when making wanted posts. We do not allow members to state it in the post, however, full disclosure to the member responding to the post is required. List moderators reserve the right to immediately ban members for failure to disclose this information when asked.

********************************************************************************

5. "No Email" Is NOT Allowed

Tacoma Area Freecycle does not allow the use of the "No Email" setting on subscriber accounts.

The reason for this policy is that we need to make sure that we

(a) have active, current membership stats and

(b) can reach the group as a whole to get important group notices and reminders out to everyone. Since Yahoo doesn't allow moderators to email the entire list regardless of their email settings, the "special notices only" option is our only alternative.

We reserve the right to edit member settings in accordance with this policy. If you currently get Individual Emails or the Daily Digest and want to stop your emails while you are on vacation, simply switch your email preference to Special Notices while you're away, then switch back to your normal email delivery when you get back home.

********************************************************************************

6. PETS

Please re-home your animal friends with great care. Consider more than one response, and arrange a meeting between any prospective new owners (all family members) and the pet, and consider offering to take the animal back if needed. Keep more than one response in case you need to contact an alternate. Be honest about the pet. State any issues the animal may have and gather records you may have about the animal for the new owners. Choose a new forever home for your pet with great care. NOTE: We do NOT allow 'Wanteds' for pets.

********************************************************************************

7. Members' Signature Lines

I have noticed that occasionally someone will forget to remove the part of their signature that advertises their business or the company they work for. This is considered spamming, regardless of whether you intend it as such or not. I do not always catch such incidents, but when I do, I usually email the person and ask them to repost properly, omitting the commercial part of their signature. Submitting your post via your cell phone also generates a signature line ad from your cell phone carrier. This is also considered spam. Repeat offenders (and I am beginning to keep lists) WILL be removed from the list.

********************************************************************************

8. MODERATION

New members are automatically set to "Moderated" status. This means that their posts are reviewed before being posted to the group as a whole. Members are removed from moderation when they've demonstrated an understanding of posting rules, and as the volunteer moderators' time allows. Members may be reset to "Moderated" with or without notice if they do not follow Freecycle rules.

THANK YOU for reading this far. We know there are a lot of rules, but they're designed to keep this list functioning and flowing. These rules do seem to head off a lot of potential trouble. This is a really nice group, and by practicing these rules, it can only get better!

File - MemberPlugin to help with formatting posts

Hello Freecycle(TM) Member,

MOD NOTE: This post contains links to an outside site. The Moderators have tested these links and they are virus free, genuine links to the MemberPlugin site.

An easy way to get your message formatting right is to use the Freecycle plugin for Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. Here are some relevant links (also found on our Links page):

Member Plugin Group:

Yahoo! Groups - discussion group for people using the Freecycle MemberPlugin for Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox

Are you thinking, "Why bother?" Here are a few more good reasons to use the plugin:

1.) It shows you your recent OFFER and WANTED posts, so you can keep track of what items you're still offering or looking for.

2.) It allows you to easily mark your posts as TAKEN or RECEIVED with just a few clicks - so you can keep other people informed without having to compose a whole new post.

3.) It hides posts you probably don't want to see. And once you've installed, all this works within Yahoo's web pages - so you don't need to remember to go to another site, or sign up anywhere else - it all just comes on one easy to read page.

4.) It is pre-configured so that you will always remember how to set up your subject lines and messages. It will drastically reduce the need for moderators to send reminder emails to you and have you repost your items.

http://wiki.memberplugin.org/index.php/Why_Bother%3F

We sincerely hope you all try out the Member Plugin. It's a wonderful tool that will make posting a snap!

We hope you enjoy the member plugin as much as we do!

File - Blanket Wish Lists

Posted by: "TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com" TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com

Sun Jan 2, 2011 7:02 pm (PST)

WANTED POLICY: No more than 3 'Wanted' posts per 7 days (1 item per post) and you may not ask for the same item again for at least 14 days.

Today I would like to talk about 'blanket' wish lists...

A `blanket' wish list is a `Wanted' post that does not have a `specific' item listed that a member is looking for. These types of posts are getting out of hand as some members are getting around our *1 item per post* guideline by posting a 'blanket' list of items they are looking for. While this may seem harmless to some, it is becoming common practice and needs to be addressed.

We DO NOT allow 'blanket' wish lists to be posted to our group.

Here's a small example of what IS NOT allowed:

Wanted: toys (Tacoma)
Looking for any kind of toys you have.

Wanted: Outdoor items (Tacoma)
Looking for any kind of outdoor items (slides, swing set, lawn decorations, canopy, etc) you have.

Wanted: Baby items (Tacoma)
Looking for bottles, blankets, clothes, anything for a baby.

Wanted: Cd's (Tacoma)
Looking for any and all Cd's that you might have lying around.

Wanted: Video Tapes (Tacoma)
Looking for any unused videotapes that you no longer watch.

We thought long and hard and with the help of members suggestions we came up with some revisions.

Here's a small example of what IS allowed:

CLOTHES
Specifically name a size range that you are looking for. If posting for multiple people, the sizes need to be in separate 'Wanted' posts.

CD's
Specifically name what type of music you are looking for. If it is for children, it would be a good idea to specify a name range of the child so members know what is appropriate to offer.

TOYS
Specify a short age range of the children that the toys will be for and specifically what type of toy (educational, board, etc).

VIDEO GAMES
Specifically name a short age range of the children that the video games would be for. This way, members will know what is appropriate to offer.

We realize that there are just some things that you cannot separate in order to `specifically' request one item. These posts will still be allowed on the list for now on a case-by-case basis until something else can be worked out (ask if in doubt).

Fabric and Christmas or Halloween decorations are items that are not practical to `specifically' request separately. Asking for a dining room table and chairs is perfectly acceptable. Also asking for a 'matching' couch and loveseat is acceptable as well as long as the items are a set.

Do understand that as a member of this group, when you keep items out of landfills and/or recycle, your efforts are charitable to both the earth AND to future generations. This alone is reason to feel proud of any and all of your efforts.

Thank you for being such an awesome group!

File - Spammer Alert

Posted by: "TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com" TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com

Sun Jan 2, 2011 7:02 pm (PST)

Hello Freecycle(TM) Members!

Many members, in other groups, have recently reported that in response to their WANTED (and sometimes OFFER) postings, they have been sent emails, supposedly from someone who has exactly what they're looking for. The senders claim that photos are available on some website or other, which they thoughtfully provide a link to.

Obviously, this is a scam; the emails are spam; and the authors are scumbags. I cannot stress enough the importance of NOT clicking on any link that is sent to you unless you are absolutely sure you trust the source. I would ask them to either post the photo to the group's web page or email you the photo.

Clicking on the link will either give your computer a virus or hijack your email and send emails with links to everyone in your email address book.

NOTE: We DO NOT allow ANY outside links to be posted to our group. Hence, DO NOT click on a link within a post!

Please send a copy of any suspect emails to the group owner:

TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com

Kind regards,
Your Friendly Tacoma Area Freecycle Moderators

File - Wanted Messages

Sun Jan 2, 2011 7:02 pm (PST)

With the changes in the economy there has been a surge in the list of WANTED ads. I just wanted to remind everyone that we are not designed to be a wish list or a charitable organization. We are not here to take care of needy families and provide gifts to others. (Though this may occasionally be the result, it is NOT our primary intent). There are other organizations that can do this. Messages asking for help for families, etc. will not be approved.

Freecycle(TM) exists as a forum to help people give away items that they would otherwise be throwing away. We are here to OFFER things that we have but no longer want or need. I do not object to wanted ads, but I think that we all need to consider what we are here for and use them wisely.

That being said, I just need to point out a few things about WANTED ads. Please do not include a story of why you want something, or who it is for. We kindly ask that you help us to keep the site objective, and simply post "WANTED: Item (Location)". The body of the email will be reserved for only details necessary to explain what the item is, where you are willing to travel, or a simple thank you on your 'Taken' post.

Thanks in advance for lowering the moderator's work by sticking to the rules.
We work very hard to keep the site up to date for everyone.

Do you have some of those square footstool looking things that are also meant for storage? I'm hoping to find a couple of them, preferrably black, in pretty good shape.

I'm needing some practical seating options for occasional company, and thought these would be just the thing.

Thanks
