Hello Freecycle Members,

An easy way to get your message formatting right is to use the Freecycle plugin for Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. Here are some relevant links (also found on our Links page):

Member Plugin Group:

Yahoo! Groups - discussion group for people using the Freecycle MemberPlugin for Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MemberPlugin/

Member Plugin Wiki:

Help installing and using the plugin:

Member's Freecycle Plugin for Internet Explorer:

A tool to help you create suitable messages for Freecycle groups

http://wiki.memberplugin.org/index.php/Installing_Internet_Explorer_Version

Are you thinking, "Why bother?" Here are a few more good reasons to use the plugin:

1.) It shows you your recent OFFER and WANTED posts, so you can keep track of what items you're still offering or looking for.

2.) It allows you to easily mark your posts as TAKEN or RECEIVED with just a few clicks - so you can keep other people informed without having to compose a whole new post.

3.) It hides posts you probably don't want to see. And once you've installed, all this works within Yahoo's web pages - so you don't need to remember to go to another site, or sign up anywhere else - it all just comes on one easy to read page.

4.) It is pre-configured so that you will always remember how to set up your subject lines and messages. It will drastically reduce the need for moderators to send reminder emails to you and have you repost your items.

http://wiki.memberplugin.org/index.php/Why_Bother%3F

We sincerely hope you all try out the Member Plugin. It's a wonderful tool that will make posting a snap!

We hope you enjoy the member plugin as much as we do!

File - Wanted Messages

Hi all,

We just wanted to remind everyone that we are not designed to be a charitable organization. We are not here to take care of needy families and provide gifts to others. (Though this may occasionally be the result, it is NOT our primary intent). There are other organizations that can do this. Messages asking for help for families, friends, etc. will not be approved.

Freecycle exists as a forum to help people give away items that they would otherwise be throwing away. We are here to OFFER things that we have but no longer want or need. I do not object to wanted ads, but I think that we all need to consider what we are here for and use them wisely.

That being said, I just need to point out a few things about WANTED ads. Please do not include a story of why you want something, or who it is for. We kindly ask that you help us to keep the site objective, and simply post "WANTED: Item (Location)". The body of the email will be reserved for only details necessary to explain what the item is, where you are willing to travel, or a simple thank you on your 'Taken' post.

Thanks in advance for lowering the moderator's work by sticking to the rules. We work very hard to keep the site up to date for everyone.

File - Check Out Our Cafe!

Posted by: "TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com" TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com

Sun May 1, 2011 3:28 am (PDT)

Hi all!

Be sure and check out our Freecycle Cafe, which is open to members of Tacoma Area Freecycle Members only. It is a place where you can share coupons, links, services, resources, community agencies, volunteer opportunities, trade, or barter. You MUST be a current member of the main group to belong to the Cafe.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TacomaAreaFreecycle_Cafe

For those of you who have not yet checked out the Cafe, here's a sample of things you can do there:

1.) Post your favorite Freecycle story!
2.) Use the calendar to post upcoming recycle events.
3.) You may also advertise your business there by posting a link, but no soliciting of business in posts, please!
4.) Chat live with other members!

There are other things you can do in the cafe that aren't allowed in the main Tacoma Area Freecycle group. For example:

Things like asking for plants, tickets, coupons, etc. can be done there (still keep it legal, free and appropriate for all ages). You may also advertise your business there by posting a link, but no soliciting of business in posts, please!

I am not going to transfer all the links from the "parent" group to this one, so if you need a specific link, you will need to check the other group's Links.

The same goes for our group Files. Rules and caveats are all going to remain solely in the "parent" group but will apply in the Cafe.

To join: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TacomaAreaFreecycle_Cafe/

We hope to see you there soon!

ADMIN: Dear FreecycleAbby (or, "who gets my stuff?")

Posted by: "TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com" TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com

Sun May 1, 2011 4:34 am (PDT)

Dear Freecycle Abby: (or, "who gets my stuff?")

I made my first four offers today on Freecycle.
Some of what I experienced after that:

-- Folks responding immediately to my OFFER just to be the FIRST, but clearly not thinking about whether they really wanted what I was offering - or even if it was possible for them to pick it up.
-- Emails asking me questions that were already clearly answered in my OFFER posting.
-- More than one person emailed with no mention of which item they were interested in - in either the subject or the body of their message.
-- Another person actually asked me to ship the item to him...out-of-state.
-- At least one email lecturing (actually, berating) me about how I "advertised" and "sold" my items. (Honestly, I did my best and I think my posts show effort. And this being Freecycle, I didn't think I was advertising or selling anything.)
-- And LOTS of people for whom the words "please" or "thank you" don't seem to be part of the English language. I don't expect someone to bow and scrape before me. But I didn't really expect to be given lots of orders and demands in response to my OFFER, either.

I started today feeling good that I was doing something positive. I ended the day in not the best of moods.

Signed, Cheerless in (Freecycle)Seattle

Dear Cheerless:

My, my, you try to do something good for the other people and for the planet, and look what happens. Not only are some people ungrateful, but they're downright rude in the bargain. Wouldn't it be nice if you could wave a magic wand and make all the thoughtless, impolite, greedy, and generally clueless people go away, and just give your stuff to the few who seem to remember that you're offering a gift that they should show just a teensy bit of gratitude for?

Well, you know what? You can.

You have an extraordinary power - as does everyone else here, though they all seem to keep forgetting about it. And that power is this: when you make an OFFER, *you* get to choose who gets it. You and only you. You _don't_ have to pick the person who's first to reply after your offer's posted, or the one who's the most insistent. You can wait and see all of what comes into your Inbox for as long as you want to, and then *you* get to choose one of them to take your OFFER. And you don't need to justify your decision to anyone but yourself.

Fabby herself usually lets a day or so pass after her Offer: goes out to see who answers, and then picks the person who asked for the thing the most politely. Or sometimes it's the one who had the best and funniest story about why they needed it, or who turns out to be located in the same neighborhood as she is. Very often this _isn't_ the first person who replies, which is a nice benefit: not everyone can be hovering at their computers 24x7, and Fabby thinks even people with dial-up Internet connections who check their email only once a day (gasp!) or participate via the sort-of-Daily Digest should have an equal shot at getting stuff generously offered here. There's no rule that people with the gigabit broadband cable feeds and RedBull-enhanced fingers should get first dibs on everything, you know.

And so what can you do about the others who respond, especially the ones you encountered who seem to have gotten report cards saying "doesn't play well with others"? Well, it gets even better. You can simply delete each and every email you get from them without replying. Bzzzt, thank you for playing, but no cookware set for this guest today, Johnny. The beauty of it is that once you post a TAKEN notice, you're done - it serves as a blanket answer to *everyone* else who emailed you, so you don't have to do anything more.

Perhaps after a few dozen times of the same thing happening and being told "it's taken" even though they know they responded 20 milliseconds after the posting hit their mailbox, some people *might* start to think a little bit...maybe there's more to being part of this community than how fast they can click on the "send" button?

That maybe whatever it was their mother told them - you know, about being polite and courteous to others and thankful for gifts they get - might actually be good to remember?

No, you're right, probably not. But it's nice to imagine, isn't it?

Yours in reuse,
FreeycleAbby (aka "Fabby")

(PS: By the way, you don't have to respond back to the *nice* people who email you but didn't get your item, either: the TAKEN does the work for you there as well. Though of course you're welcome to send them an email with your regrets if you want to, or save their addresses just in case the first taker doesn't make it. Again, you're the OFFERer, so it's all your choice.)

ADMIN: Change in Guidelines for 'Wanted' Posts

Posted by: "TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com" TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com

Sun May 1, 2011 4:34 am (PDT)

Hello Freecycle Members!

This is a lengthy ADMIN but it is recommended that all of our members read through it as it contains some very important information regarding a change in our 'Wanted' guidelines and how to post.

With the changes in the economy there has been a surge in the list of WANTED ads and we are not only receiving many complaints from members that are tired of looking through nothing but 'Wanted' posts, but we are losing members over it as well.

I just wanted to remind everyone that we are not designed to be a charitable organization. We are not here to take care of needy families and provide gifts to others. (Though this may occasionally be the result, it is NOT our primary intent). There are other organizations that can do this. Messages asking for help for families, neighbors, groups, furnishing your office, etc. will not be approved.

Freecycle exists as a forum to help people give away items that they would otherwise be throwing away. We are here to OFFER things that we have but no longer want or need. I do not object to wanted ads as they also keep items out of landfills, but I think that we all need to consider what we are here for and use them wisely.

That being said, we have decided to change our guidelines on 'Wanted' posts. We have searched the guidelines of many other groups in Washington and have come up with the following changes:

No more than 1 'Wanted' post per day - 2 per week and you may not repost for the same item in 14 days.

We are hoping that by making this small change to our guidelines that it will satisfy both our members that are not happy with the amount of 'Wanted' posts being submitted whilst allowing members to still keep items out of landfills by asking for items.

For our members that do not want to scroll through all of the 'Wanted' posts, we have a great tool for you called the MemberPlugin.

It shows you your recent OFFER and WANTED posts, so you can keep track of what items you're still offering or looking for. It allows you to easily mark your posts as TAKEN or RECEIVED with just a few clicks - so you can keep other people informed without having to compose a whole new post.

It hides posts you probably don't want to see. And once you've installed it, all this works within Yahoo's web pages - so you don't need to remember to go to another site, or sign up anywhere else - it all just comes for free. Please scroll down to the end of this ADMIN to find the link to install the MemberPlugin. You won't be sorry. =^)

I also need to point out a few things about WANTED ads. Please DO NOT include a story of why you want something, or who it is for. We kindly ask that you help us to keep the site objective, and simply post "WANTED: Item (your Location)". The body of the email will be reserved for only details necessary to explain what the item is, your willingness to pick up, further details of your location, or a simple thank you.

When posting a 'Wanted' item, only ask for ONE 'specific' item per post. Posts asking for multiple items will be returned. 'Blanket' lists will also be returned. A 'blanket' list is a 'Wanted' post that does not have one 'specific' item listed that a member is looking for. Asking for 'any' items on the subject line and then listing them in the body of the post is also considered a blanket post.

Here's a small example of what is NOT allowed:

WANTED: toys (Tacoma)
Looking for any kind of toys you have.

WANTED: Outdoor items (Tacoma)
Looking for any kind of outdoor items (slides, swing set, lawn decorations, canopy, etc) you have.

WANTED: Baby items (Tacoma)
Looking for bottles, blankets, clothes, anything for a baby.

WANTED: Cd's (Tacoma)
Looking for any and all Cd's that you might have lying around.

WANTED: Video Tapes (Tacoma)
Looking for any unused videotapes that you no longer watch.

Just one more reminder before we go...

Please make sure to check your bulk/trash folder for replies. Many of our members tell us that they lose contact with a respondent because their email ends up in the bulk/trash folder. This is frustrating not only for the member that is Offering an item but to the member requesting it.

Thank you in advance for lowering the Moderator's work by sticking to the rules. We work very hard to keep the site up to date for everyone. We would also like to thank all of the members that have sent in compliments on how the site is run, it is very much appreciated!

Thanks for being part of the solution!

=> Subject Line: Every message posted must have OFFER, TAKEN, WANTED, or RECEIVED followed by the specific item description. All posts also need your location AFTER the item description - NO EXCEPTIONS.

=> Wanteds - no more than 1 per day with a max of 2 per week. You may not repost for 14 days - NO EXCEPTIONS.

=> Do not use the word "pending" in your TAKEN subject lines. Just say "TAKEN" when you either have given the item away or have enough replies and you're sure the item will have a new home. You may not repost the same Offer item for 14 days (even if you had a no-show).

=> Links - Do not post a link to another site within your message to show what your item looks like. We don't want to take a chance of our members going to another site and getting adware or a virus. We have a Photo Album on site that you can post your picture on. It's very quick and easy to copy the picture onto your computer, add it to the Photo Album and then remove the picture from your computer again.

=> Please join our community forum, the Tacoma Area Freecycle Café. It is a place where you can share coupons, links, services, resources, community agencies, volunteer opportunities, trade, or barter.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TacomaAreaFreecycle_Cafe

=> An easy way to get your posts right the first time is to use the MemberPlugin for Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, which will help you format your messages correctly. Please go to http://wiki.memberplugin.org and follow the instructions to install it.

FREECYCLE NETWORK MEMBERS USE THE LIST AT THEIR OWN RISK.

Please take reasonable measures to protect your safety and privacy when posting to the list or participating in an exchange. By joining the list, you agree to hold neither the list owners, moderators nor anyone affiliated with Freecycle.org responsible or liable for any circumstance resulting from a Freecycle-related exchange or communication.

SAFETY. Be aware! It is up to each individual member of Freecycle when arranging for pickup of the item being given away to be appropriately aware of the potential risk of having "a stranger" come to your home to pick something up. Freecycle as an organization assumes no responsibility for this risk. If you, for example, are a single woman living alone, you may want to arrange to meet in a public place or leave the item on the front porch without mentioning whether or not you'll be home at the time of pickup. Be cautious about revealing too much personal information.

Thank you,

File - Posting Rules of Tacoma Area Freecycle

Posted by: "TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com" TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com

Sun May 1, 2011 5:09 am (PDT)

1. Posting to the Group

These are the POSTING RULES for Tacoma Area Freecycle
(Rev. May 1, 2011)

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TacomaAreaFreecycle

{*{*{Changing the world one gift at a time}*}*}

Thank you for being a member of this local group of The Freecycle Network. Although long, the rules are really quite simple. Please read the rules before posting so you can enjoy your Freecycle experience.
__________________________________________________________

WHAT FREECYCLE IS:
Freecycle is an international grassroots environmental movement designed to minimize the amount of "stuff" we dump in our landfills. We do this by providing a forum for people to give their unwanted but still usable items to new homes. As a side benefit, we're also creating a strong sense of community.

WHAT FREECYCLE IS NOT:
a) a place to publicize long lists
b) a place to ask for extravagant or new items that aren't likely to be given away
c) a charitable organization to meet all your wants/needs
d) a discussion list
__________________________________________________________

TANGIBLE ITEMS -- FREE, LEGAL, & APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES
This is our main Freecycle rule to live by. E-mail, Yahoo ID's, etc., must be family-friendly. No weapons, adult-oriented items, alcohol, tobacco. If in doubt, e-mail the moderators for assistance.
__________________________________________________________

WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO MAKE YOUR FIRST POST AN OFFER, NOT A WANTED.
__________________________________________________________

SUBJECT LINES OF POSTS
Use only these keywords to make it easy for others to view:

OFFER
WANTED
TAKEN
RECVD (or RECEIVED)

Your Home (Location) is **required** at the end of the subject line for all posts submitted to encourage local gifting. Feel free to include EITHER your city OR 2 intersecting cross-streets.

USE THE ABOVE KEYWORDS ONLY
DO NOT USE: Reoffered, Repost, Needed, Pending Pickup.

EXAMPLES -- with (Location: OR nearest cross-streets)

OFFER: Birdcage (Tacoma)
TAKEN: Birdcage (Tacoma)

WANTED: Moving boxes (6th & Jackson)
RECEIVED: Moving Boxes (6th & Jackson)

ADMIN: For moderators' messages to all members -- please read.

(Location) is **required** at the end of all subject lines.

Use your city OR your crossroads (2 intersecting streets).

NOTE: DO NOT USE "PENDING" OR "PENDING PICKUP" IN THE SUBJECT LINE! Please put "pending" or "pending pickup" in the BODY of your message!!
__________________________________________________________

HOW TO POST TO THE LIST

a) Send an email to TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com
or
b) From the website select "POST"

OFFER and WANTED posts

The subject line *must* have 3 parts:
1) start with the keyword OFFER, TAKEN, WANTED or RECEIVED
2) followed by the item you're offering or requesting
3) ending with your home location in parenthesis on **ALL** posts

ABOUT OFFERs

Multiple OFFERs may be listed in one e-mail.
Please number each item for clarity.
You may include a general grouping in the subject line; for example:
OFFER: Kitchen items--see list (Tacoma)
OFFER: Kids' stuff--see list (Spanaway)
OFFER: Misc. stuff (Parkland)

Please post a TAKEN for each OFFER when a recipient has been chosen or the item has been picked up. Post only one TAKEN per OFFER.

DESCRIPTION: Describe your item using color, size, condition. Note if it needs repair, works great, or is damaged or soiled. A recipient is under no obligation to take an OFFER if it isn't accurately described. Some items truly are landfill-ready.

__________________________________________________________

REPOSTING: Please wait at least 14 days to repost the same item. This is because of the high volume of email that comes through this group on a daily basis. We don't want to overload member mailboxes unnecessarily. In the meantime, our members have the capability of searching the member archives and anyone who is looking for your item will find your original message.

__________________________________________________________

PHOTOS: You're welcome to upload a photo of the item to the website and mention it in your post. Add your photos using "Create Album" and name it with your e-mail name or Yahoo ID. Please delete the photo when posting a TAKEN.
__________________________________________________________

WHO GETS MY OFFER?
That is totally up to you! We recommend that you select from several responses, not just the first one. Consider collecting responses for up to 24 hours to give everyone a chance. If a non-profit group responds, you might consider giving your item to them.

You do NOT have to respond to each member that contacts you about your item. They will know the item has been gifted once you post a 'Taken'.

***SAVE YOUR EMAIL REPLIES IN CASE OF A NO-SHOW***
__________________________________________________________

RESALE of OFFERS
A seller may only respond to an OFFER with full disclosure of their intent to sell the item. ***For example, a non-profit group might respond seeking items for a fund-raiser.*** Members have the right to inquire as to the intended use of any item they OFFER, and are free to give it to anyone they want.
__________________________________________________________

WHEN DO I POST A TAKEN?
When you've gifted your OFFER, and/or the item has been picked up, then you post a TAKEN. This notifies members your item is no longer available. Posting a TAKEN takes the place of writing every member who responded to your OFFER. You may wish to mention the member's first name to create a sense of community.

Do not use "Pending Pickup" or "PPU" in the subject line. Save emails from a few responders, so that if the item is not picked up, you can offer it to your second choice. If you have a no-show, do not repost the item. You will need to wait 14 days to repost the same item. Meanwhile, members can see your original post on the list.
__________________________________________________________

ABOUT WANTED POSTS

WANTED posts help the Freecycle world go 'round, but are not its main focus. Freecycle is not a charitable organization and isn't meant to provide everything you want or need. Be reasonable and request items that someone might be done using. Above all else, don't ask for an extravagant item like a diamond ring, which we'd all like to have. Messages asking for help for families other than your own, etc. will not be approved.

Members may not post WANTEDS for items to resell.

__________________________________________________________

BLANKET WISH LISTS
Long list of items in a 'Wanted' post will be returned for editing by the member. We ask that you submit ONE specific item per 'Wanted' post.

Ok to post:

WANTED: Sewing items (Tacoma)
Looking for needles and thread.

NOT ok:

WANTED: Sewing items (Tacoma)
Looking for needles, thread, fabric, sewing machine, quilting machine, or anything else you have for sewing.

__________________________________________________________

POLICY FOR 'WANTED' POSTS
The guideline on placing 'Wanted' posts is no more than 1 'Wanted' post per day - 2 per week and you may not ask for the same item again for at least 14 days. When a member tries to post more than 2 'Wanted' posts, a denial email will be sent to the member reminding them of the guideline. If a member habitually goes over the number of 'Wanted' posts, we reserve the right to put the member on moderation.

__________________________________________________________

WHEN DO I POST A RECVD?
When your WANTED post brings a response and you receive your item, please post your RECVD message so we can share in your success. You may wish to thank the generous person by first name.

__________________________________________________________

1. RESPONDING TO AN OFFER or a WANTED

Responses go to the member, not to the group. Be friendly. Suggest a pickup time that might work for you and what part of town you are coming from. Don't just say, "I want it." Be polite.

If you have deleted an email and are trying to reach a member, contact the moderators before posting to the group to see if they can help you.

The address for contacting the moderators is the "List owner" address found at the bottom of each group's homepage.

********************************************************************************

2. PICKUPS and NO-SHOWS

Arrange pickup of the item with one member at a time. No "first come, first serve" OFFERs to multiple recipients because they cause disappointment and waste gas, which isn't in the spirit of Freecycle.

When you arrange to pick something up, please show up! If you can't make it, a quick CALL or EMAIL will be appreciated by the other member who is giving you a gift as well as their time. Don't end up on someone's no-show list. Word gets around. Make it a friendly and safe transaction.

__________________________________________________________

Be polite & respectful; meet when arranged:

I know it can sometimes be like playing phone tag, only with emails, but please do not tell someone you are coming at such and such a time unless you are *sure* you can do so. I usually do not put my life on hold for someone to come pick up an item, but if I *am* home and expecting someone, and no one shows, I consider it very inconsiderate of the "no-show".

Another thing: if you go to someone's house to pick up something that has been left out by the door, and the homeowner is not home or cannot come to the door for some reason, it would be courteous of you to leave a note to let the homeowner know who picked up the item.

We understand that sometimes last minute emergencies pop up; life happens.... If it does, it's courteous to let the gifter know before you make them wait for you. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Showing up when you say you will is good for you, the gifter, and the Freecycle community.

And please don't ask for an item unless you are positive that you want it! I think a lot of people do "impulse shopping" and then change their mind about getting what they thought they wanted five minutes earlier. It's okay to change your mind, but if you do, please let the offerer know ASAP, so they can give the item to someone else.

__________________________________________________________

No Politics, No Spam, No Money.
__________________________________________________________

No Trading Please! Please see our link to the TACOMA AREA FREECYCLE" CAFÉ below.

Replies Go Only To Offerer. It keeps down the sheer number of e-mails.

By joining the list, you agree to hold neither the list owners, moderators nor anyone affiliated with Freecycle.org responsible or liable for any circumstance resulting from a Freecycle-related exchange or communication.

SAFETY -- Public posting and personal information Tacoma Area Freecycle prohibits placing phone numbers or addresses in posts. Exchange in private email only, never in a post to the group. You might get swamped with calls. A reverse look-up service might provide access to your address. Making contact information publicly available is a risk that is not encouraged. Addresses are not allowed in posts to the group, except when advertising a free "moving sale" or freebies after a yard sale.

I am concerned for the safety of our members, as well as your identity. Though it can be more convenient to list your personal information for everyone to see, it is not worth the risk. I do my best to keep out spammers and perverts, but there is no reason to ASSUME that EVERYONE in our group is honest, much as we'd all like to believe they are. The fact is that we all need to be very careful about giving out personal information to strangers!

It is up to each member of Freecycle to be appropriately aware of the potential risk of having "a stranger" come to your home to pick up an item. Freecycle as an organization assumes no responsibility for this risk. You may want to arrange to meet in a public place or leave the item on the front porch without mentioning whether or not you'll be home at the time of pickup. Be cautious about revealing too much personal information.

3. OUR LIST OF NO'S

The following are NOT ALLOWED in Tacoma Area Freecycle:
Tobacco
Alcohol
Firearms/Weapons/Ammunition
Fireworks
Money (no offering to pay for or sell an item, or delivery fees),
Vitamins and Prescription Drugs (of any kind),
Cosmetics (of any kind, including all creams, lotions, oils, etc.)
Coupons & Tickets,
*WANTEDS* for Food (for human & animal consumption),
*WANTEDS* for Disposable Diapers,
*WANTEDS* for Pets,
*WANTEDS* for Plants & Seeds,
Discussions,
Selling,
Trade/Barter,
Borrowing,
Services,
Politics,
Religion,
Adult Content,
Spam,
No personal attacks or rudeness, or correcting another member's list etiquette.
It's all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

No use of email footers, taglines, signature lines and/or footers that contain business information, addresses, phone numbers, websites, links, or blogs advertising. They WILL be edited at the moderator's discretion.

All items must be free -- no strings attached.

Do not contact members except to respond to an OFFER or a WANTED, including mass email. Do not add members to your address book unless you've established a mutual relationship with them.

This is by no means a complete list. Moderators have the right to add items as they deem necessary.

Guns, Ammunition, or Any Type of Weapon

It is against Freecycle policy to post guns or ammo. One of the rules of Freecycle is that everything must be appropriate for all ages, which ammunition clearly is not. But if someone wanted to pass on used shell casings or cloth wads or a reloader machine or something like that, well I don't see the harm. Gunpowder, black powder, live ammo, pistols, rifles, grenades etc. cannot be posted. There are plenty of boards and groups dedicated to shooting sports and weapons in general.

********************************************************************************

4. Reseller Guidelines

Occasionally list members will reply to offers or post wanteds for items they do not intend to use personally. Whether they resell or redistribute the item, for their own profit or not, these members are termed resellers for purposes of this list.

While claiming or asking for items in order to resell or redistribute them does not violate Freecycle guidelines, some members prefer to give their items directly to the people who will use them. For this reason, members are entitled to ask responders if they intend to resell the item in question before agreeing to the transaction. If asked, resellers MUST disclose their intention to resell/redistribute any item.

In addition, resellers are also required to state their intention to resell/redistribute when making wanted posts. We do not allow members to state it in the post, however, full disclosure to the member responding to the post is required. List moderators reserve the right to immediately ban members for failure to disclose this information when asked.

********************************************************************************

5. "No Email" Is NOT Allowed

Tacoma Area Freecycle does not allow the use of the "No Email" setting on subscriber accounts.

The reason for this policy is that we need to make sure that we

(a) have active, current membership stats and

(b) can reach the group as a whole to get important group notices and reminders out to everyone. Since Yahoo doesn't allow moderators to email the entire list regardless of their email settings, the "special notices only" option is our only alternative.

We reserve the right to edit member settings in accordance with this policy. If you currently get Individual Emails or the Daily Digest and want to stop your emails while you are on vacation, simply switch your email preference to Special Notices while you're away, then switch back to your normal email delivery when you get back home.

********************************************************************************

6. PETS

Please re-home your animal friends with great care. Consider more than one response, and arrange a meeting between any prospective new owners (all family members) and the pet, and consider offering to take the animal back if needed. Keep more than one response in case you need to contact an alternate. Be honest about the pet. State any issues the animal may have and gather records you may have about the animal for the new owners. Choose a new forever home for your pet with great care. NOTE: We do NOT allow 'Wanteds' for pets.

********************************************************************************

7. Members' Signature Lines

I have noticed that occasionally someone will forget to remove the part of their signature that advertises their business or the company they work for. This is considered spamming, regardless of whether you intend it as such or not. I do not always catch such incidents, but when I do, I usually email the person and ask them to repost properly, omitting the commercial part of their signature. Submitting your post via your cell phone also generates a signature line ad from your cell phone carrier. This is also considered spam. Repeat offenders (and I am beginning to keep lists) WILL be removed from the list.

********************************************************************************

8. MODERATION

New members are automatically set to "Moderated" status. This means that their posts are reviewed before being posted to the group as a whole. Members are removed from moderation when they've demonstrated an understanding of posting rules, and as the volunteer moderators' time allows. Members may be reset to "Moderated" with or without notice if they do not follow Freecycle rules.

THANK YOU for reading this far. We know there are a lot of rules, but they're designed to keep this list functioning and flowing. These rules do seem to head off a lot of potential trouble. This is a really nice group, and by practicing these rules, it can only get better!

File - Blanket Wish Lists

Posted by: "TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com" TacomaAreaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com

Sun May 1, 2011 5:09 am (PDT)

WANTED POLICY: No more than 1 'Wanted' post per day - 2 per week and you may not ask for the same item again for at least 14 days.

Today I would like to talk about 'blanket' wish lists...

A `blanket' wish list is a `Wanted' post that does not have a `specific' item listed that a member is looking for. Asking for 'Any' items on the subject line and then listing them in the body of the post is still considered a blanket listing. These types of posts are getting out of hand as some members are getting around our *1 item per post* guideline by posting a 'blanket' list of items they are looking for. While this may seem harmless to some, it is becoming common practice and needs to be addressed.

We DO NOT allow 'blanket' wish lists to be posted to our group.

We thought long and hard and with the help of members suggestions we came up with some revisions.

Here's a small example of what IS allowed:

CLOTHES
Specifically name a size range that you are looking for. If posting for multiple people, the sizes need to be in separate 'Wanted' posts.

CD's
Specifically name what type of music you are looking for. If it is for children, it would be a good idea to specify a name range of the child so members know what is appropriate to offer.

TOYS
Specify a short age range of the children that the toys will be for and specifically what type of toy (educational, board, etc).

VIDEO GAMES
Specifically name a short age range of the children that the video games would be for. If asking for games for the whole family, please note this in the post. This way, members will know what is appropriate to offer.

We realize that there are just some things that you cannot separate in order to `specifically' request one item. These posts will still be allowed on the list for now on a case-by-case basis until something else can be worked out (ask if in doubt).

Fabric and Christmas or Halloween decorations are items that are not practical to `specifically' request separately. Asking for a dining room table and chairs is perfectly acceptable. Also asking for a 'matching' couch and loveseat is acceptable as well as long as the items are a set.

Do understand that as a member of this group, when you keep items out of landfills and/or recycle, your efforts are charitable to both the earth AND to future generations. This alone is reason to feel proud of any and all of your efforts.

Thank you for being such an awesome group!
